Oil Choice

I get several emails a week asking which products that I use for cleaning the reels.  I am a big believer in Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner.  It is non-toxic and biodegradable and does an excellent job of cleaning a reel.  I suggest a 12:1 (10:1 on really dirty reels) ratio of water to Simple Green.  I wipe and brush all of my parts, then run them through a warm water Ultra Sonic bath for about 30 minutes, then a pure water bath for 10 minutes to remove any residue that may have been left behind.  Then I clean each part individually with the items that you find in the kit above.  Ball Bearings (not roller bearings) are cleaned in Naptha, then immediately spun and blown dry with an air compressor (those compressed cans of air work great too!), and then wiped clean.  Spacers, brake cases, and the magnetic side of the spool is polished with Brasso or for aluminum I use Blue Magic.  Reel handles are cleaned with Joe's Hand Cleaner and a nail brush.

I always recommend a full break down of the reel.  Every part must come off, be cleaned, and inspected, then lubed properly before being reassembled.  If you maintain your reels on a yearly basis, this becomes easier and faster each time.  I recommend re-oiling your spool bearings and levelwind every 4-6 months or every 12 trips.  Do I recommend removing your bearings before re-oiling, yes and no.  I will only re-oil a bearing about 3 times before it gets a flushing.  Remember that oil is going somewhere.  1 drop is all you need.  Each time you re-oil, wipe the spacer and the brake case too.
